Bed bugs have the following physical traits:

These bugs don’t have wings and they can’t fly or jump. The issue is their narrow body and rare ability to live for months without food make them great squatters for long periods of time.

They can easily hide in luggage, bags, or clothes, and travel with their host without being seen.

They can also take shelter in bedding, box springs, furniture, and even inside the walls. For feeding they can crawl more than 100 feet at night, but according to the CDC, it will typically reside within 7 to 10 feet of where their hosts sleep.

1. Immediately after you realize you were victim to a bed bug infestation, you should seek out medical attention for your bites. Depending on the severity of your injuries, you may want to go to the hospital to have them professionally treated. Before you assume it’s bed bugs, make sure to properly diagnose your bites so you use the correct treatment.
2. Make sure to photograph the infestation, Take pictures of the room background to show that the infestation exists, as well as photographic evidence of the bugs and nest (if you can find it). Take pictures of your injuries wherever they occurred as well.
3. Report the infestation to your landlord or hotel management. Make sure to send the report in writing and have the direct contact number of the manager or landlord in which you’re communicating.
4. Treat Your belongings that have been infected by the infestation. Bag up all of your clothes and throw them in the dryer, and discard of any furniture or suitcases that may have bed bugs in them.
5. If your efforts to communicate with your hotel or landlord are not successful, you can send a bed bug demand letter to make all parties aware of your experience and that you won’t simply disappear if ignored.
